Feed Pets, Not Pests

We set a pet food bowl outside for at night to see what would happen, and a mouse found it the first evening!

One of the most important phrases in pest control consists of two words: “conducive conditions.” A conducive condition is like a welcome mat for pests. For rodents, offering food outside both attracts and sustains them, allowing populations to build up and encouraging them to eventually seek shelter in your home.

What if you have animals that you must feed outside? You can do a few things to avoid turning your home into a haven for mice:

  • feed your animals no larger a portion every day than your veterinarian recommends so no food remains
  • bring food bowls inside at night
  • use tall bowls, and grease the exterior with petroleum jelly (mice will be unable to climb in)
  • use dispensing feeders that can be closed at night
  • keep stored food in tightly sealed bins
